E-Sponsibility: Plagiarism Overview


With the introduction of technology new types of temptations have been introduced to the academic world. One of these temptations is plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as, "the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own." To put it simply, the act of plagiarism is "to commit literary theft" (Plagiarism and Its Repercussions.) The act of plagiarizing can be deliberate or accidental, but both types have consequences. Technology has altered the educational world, now students can type in an essay topic and find essays that were already written. By changing the author's name for their own the student's can easily submit an assignment that is plagiarized. This problem of academic integrity is becoming an epidemic in the schools.
